Dr. Minter and the staff at South Carolina Oncology Associates are nothing short of amazing. Their compassion, dedication, and professionalism turned some of the hardest days into ones filled with hope and comfort. The infusion nurses—Gwen, Rachel, and Sam—were particularly outstanding. Their warmth, kindness, and unwavering support made an incredibly challenging process bearable. They truly care for their patients and go above and beyond to ensure every moment is handled with grace and respect.Even though cancer ultimately took my husband, we are confident that the exceptional care he received helped extend his life. Dr. Minter and the team explored every possible option to save him, leaving no stone unturned in their fight to give us more time together. When the cancer progressed beyond what they could manage, Dr. Minter and the team referred us to another facility, showing their commitment to providing the best care possible. Even during the transition to hospice care for end-of-life support, they were by our side, offering guidance, compassion, and understanding. We not only received outstanding medical care but also gained a family in SCOA. Their positivity, attentiveness, and thoughtful approach to care are unmatched. We are forever grateful for their role in our journey.

I would like to share my experience with SC Oncology, particularly with Dr. James Williams, who I encountered earlier this year when my mom was diagnosed with uterine cancer. While SC Oncology may be a great place for many, my experience with Dr. Williams was deeply disappointing and distressing. In February, we visited Lexington Hospital to consult with Dr. Williams for a potential surgery. The doctors at the hospital indicated that Dr. Williams would be the one to make the plan for my mom’s care. From the moment he walked into the room, he was cold and unprofessional. He immediately started talking about how my moms surgery was unlikely because, based on her scans, she didn’t have the “right coverage” for the procedure. He didn’t even ask us about our financial situation or whether we had the means to pay for the surgery. Instead, he bluntly said that it would cost thousands of dollars, and that my mom would die on the operating table if she underwent the surgery. This was shocking, especially in a moment when we were already reeling from the devastating news of her cancer diagnosis. After I expressed my concerns to the nurses about his lack of compassion, Dr. Williams returned the next day, stating that he would “create a plan,” but nothing ever came of it. At this point, a kind-hearted nurse at Lexington Hospital, recognizing that we weren’t getting the care we needed, suggested we seek treatment at MUSC in Charleston. There, my mom was seen by an amazing team who quickly took action and performed the surgery that ultimately gave her an additional eight months of life after her diagnosis.I am sharing this now because I was recently asked to provide feedback on the doctors we encountered in Columbia, and Dr. Williams’ name came up in conversation. It’s heartbreaking to hear that my experience is not unique, and it is hard to fathom how someone like him could be working in oncology, dealing with patients who are already going through the hardest time in their lives. Dr. Williams showed no care, no empathy, and no regard for the emotional or physical well-being of my mom or our family. I understand that some doctors may not be a good fit for everyone, but his behavior was a poor representation of the values that SC Oncology claims to stand for. While I am sure many of the doctors at SCOA are compassionate and dedicated professionals, Dr. Williams is a clear exception. I would strongly advise anyone seeking oncological care to look elsewhere for someone who truly cares about their patients.

Dr. Coker is an empathetic oncologist who really listened to my concerns. For the last 3 years, he has partnered with me, providing supportive care for the choices I made, whether it was a wish for a physical therapist or mental health specialist, Dr. Coker has a wide network of excellent complementary practitioners he trusts. They have been excellent. It has been a journey of personalized medicine at its best. I highly recommend Dr. Coker.

Please don’t go here. Some specific examples: the folks running the CT machine lied to me about medical facts. When I called out the lie they said I was “harsh”. Then they went out of their way to cause barriers to my care.Nicole in the office hung up on me for being rude when I called and asked when I was supposed to get testing done. She said I was supposed to get tests every six months and it had been a year. I was in my opinion rightly upset about their negligence.I don’t remember the doctors name but the only thing he did was add anxiety meds on top of two depression meds the last doctor put me on. (Who also had zero context on who I am) Leading to increasingly terrible symptoms for me. I wrote an entire timeline of my health that he didn’t bother to read, and perceptively was annoyed that I wrote it. By the way - I don’t have anxiety or depression. I had cancer and my mom died. And instead of understanding situational awareness they drugged me up until I was a shell. And I still dont know how I found the wherewithal to get myself weened off.Perhaps it is because I had such an incredible experience from my former provider in New York so the comparison is stark - but the care here is extraordinarily poor.

I have to give this horrible office 1 star to be able to post. My dad was diagnosed with bile duct /liver cancer 6 months ago. He had been sick for 2 years and was misdiagnosed for 2 years by many other doctors. All this time has passed. So by the time treatment was offered he had lost over 100 pounds in a wheel chair and was to weak to take treatment. Dr Sara Mushtock pushed the treatment option knowing he was in no shape to undergo treatment. He had mother choice but to deny chemotherapy. So here we are today hospice has been called in and he has days minutes hours left. His hospice nurse called to get morphine called in to ease the dying process and Sara Mushtock stated she was no longer managing his pain and wouldn’t call in any medication for him. Hospice has offered more care and compassion in this past month than anyone at sc oncology has given my dad. Very frustrated with this whole process. I know that the only hope we have is Gods grace and mercy through His son Jesus. I pray Sara Mushtock never has to walk in our shoes.

I have been going to this hospital for over two years and my doctor has been informative, patient and kind. The nurses followup when they say, correct information given and very caring. They make you feel like you important and that you dont get lost in whats going on. You understand the information and you know how to do self care. My Nurse partitioner is outstanding. Very intelligent and interested in your care and sickness. They make you feel strong and tall. I am satisfied with my choice of being a patient of Dr. Williams. Its not always perfect but the team listens to you and explains the issue to where you understand. They care.

As someone else stated in a review prior, they arent very compassionate to the patient, nor the family. They led us to believe there was a chance with fighting the cancer, so my father did chemo, they said they should do 6 sessions, and only ended up doing 4 because they said it was gone and didnt need the other 2. Well, a couple months later, all of a sudden its back and all over, so they did chemo and radiation. Tried some other thing that they said would help get him out of pain, didnt work, so they said nothing more we can do, placed him on hospice, and less than 2 months, he passed away. Now, before I even got a chance to call and speak with someone in billing, but also, the office in general to let them know he had passed, they had already made a claim on his estate to get their money. On their website they state they care and have great people and social workers that are there for you and your family to help cope with diagnosis, treatment and anything else, but we never saw any of that. Never had anyone try and help him, being on a fixed income, figure out ways that could help him pay for this treatment they knew wouldnt work. And a month after he passed, they put a claim on his estate because they really only care about getting their money. Before I knew about the claim, I tried to call and speak with someone, got sent to billing and nobody answered, so I left a message. Not one person has tried to reach out to me about this matter, I suspect because they didnt want to talk to me since they knew they had that claim out there. I got a letter in the mail today stating they were making a claim, but I already knew about it, because my lawyer told me. It did take me a little time to start calling his sta offices and creditors because Im trying to deal with the death of my father. But they do not care about you as a patient, or you as a family member of a patient with cancer. They see you as a $ and they will make sure they get their money, one way or another. They will give you treatments they know wont work. They will give you false hope instead of just saying, theres no hope to cure this cancer. If there was anywhere else for you to go to have treatments, I would say, go there.

I’m guessing they were short on staff not really sure, but I called in to make an appointment and someone else answered the phone who wasn’t able to make appointments. I basically told them that I was looking to reschedule my appointment for my genetic testing. They mentioned an appointment that I had missed and I assumed that that was in regards to the genetic testing but unfortunately I was wrong. so when the person called me back who schedules the appointment, they scheduled my appointment for a lab to test my iron and not my genetic testing as a result, me thinking that it is a very important appointment, I took time off from a new job that I’m not supposed to be taking any time off since I’m in training to go to this appointment only to find out theyre just testing my iron. I was highly upset, because not only are you affecting my money but you are now affecting my health and did not have an available appointment date for the day that I actually have off of work. I am not really sure exactly how this could have gotten construed other than incompetent people but this facility needs to do a lot better in regards to appointment scheduling and scheduling the correct appointment. I usually wouldn’t be this upset about this type of situation to write a bad review, but with my mom passing from cancer, her sister passing from cancer and my mom’s other sister surviving cancer not to mention my dad passing from cancer and my sister right now going through treatments for breast cancer, I am a likely candidate to have the genetic gene for cancer. So to know that I called specifically to make an appointment for my genetic testing only for someone to relay the message that it was in regards to a lab, It is a huge discouragement, and something of this nature should not happen to anyone. imagine if I was scheduling an appointment for a chemo treatment or something to that nature but instead, they book me an appointment for something completely not related. that could definitely be drastic and could be the difference between life or death.

We were misled about the reality of my Mothers prognosis from day one. The prognosis was poor yet the doctor never told her! Lack of honesty robbed her of time she may have spent differently. She should have been in palliative care immediately instead of suffering miserably for weeks thinking there was a chance of treatment for her cancer. I cant bring her back, but hopefully I can help someone avoid the horror we went through. To the person reading this: I pray that you/your loved one possibly suffering from a gynecological type of cancer will skip SCOA and go straight to MUSC.

I cant say enough good things about SCOA. They are like a well oiled machine, and every staff member Ive come in contact with has been extremely friendly, compassionate and helpful. From the moment you walk I the door you are treated like a person, not number on a chart. The nurses in the treatment rooms, the phlebotomimists, the check in folks, all of them are amazing. My doctor, Dr Prophet and Nurse Practioner Katie are so kind and and so knowledgeable. Every question I had (and I had a LOT), every issue I encountered, they had swift responses. They have taken a very scary life experience and made it as comfortable as possible. I reached remission with their help and got to ring the bell. They have their own imaging place with everything they need to study you with so they can give you your answers mostly right away!! Also they have where you can have your bloodwork taken & answers also right then while youre there. And whether you need chemo or radiation, you have knowledgeable staff, nurses & doctors working with you. If you need one, wheel chairs right as you come in the main door. I have been with Beaver Medical for over 25 years. I had cancer 6 years ago and as a result I am tested often by many doctors. My Oncologist was Dr. Ibrahim (who I got such great care from). Recently Beaver changed their department and contracted with a group called South California Oncology Associates. I was never notified that my appointment with Dr. Ibrahim was canceled until I went in to get my labs done. That is also when I found out I couldnt see him anymore. I had to reschedule my appointment for a month later With Dr. Tsang. His nurse said she would mail me a lab slip. I never received it and had to reschedule. I also had to go to the Banning location for the lab work because of the short notice. I used to be able to go to whatever Beaver was convenient.I also want to add that my medical insurance changed in September and I specifically went in and met with the billing department to find out what insurance I should go with to insure that I would continue with all my Beaver doctors. Well I went with what they recommended and now I cant see Dr. Ibrahim anymore. I am not happy :-(

If there was a negative star rating for this facility, I would give it a negative star. No doctor will communicate with you, they will hang up on you and not understand your process of grieving or answering questions. They will skew information to make it appear as though it is you who misunderstood (severe gaslighting). They will not give you PERTINENT information that you then find out through other sources. They will “beat a dead horse” (you or your loved one) with treatments and options instead of being open about a full blown blatantly obvious terminal diagnosis because they are in the business of “healing”. They need a top-down re-evaluation or to close their doors altogether. The teams that you see for treatments (THE NURSES) are wonderful, however, the administration and doctors need a good hard look in the mirror to see what they do in regards to FAMILIES. MD Anderson or Duke is the best of the best - do whatever you must, but go somewhere other than here.
